Mississippi Comeback Sauce

Mississippi Comeback Sauce

October 24, 2020

This unique sauce is said to have originated in a Greek restaurant in Mississippi, but has quickly spread throughout the entire South. The original sauce contained a base of mayonnaise and Heinz Spicy Sauce (a tomato sauce not to be confused with a sweet pepper sauce), along with some other condiments. There are many explanations for this addictive sauce, with each person putting their own spin on the original as it spreads across the area. Since Heinz Chili sauce isn’t something I keep in the pantry, I made a few substitutions to create a similar flavor profile using the items I kept on hand, and in the process put the Budget Bytes stamp on the classic comeback sauce. 😉

* Ingredients:

° 1 cup mayonnaise (Duke’s if available, otherwise use Hellmann’s)

° 1/4 cup Heinz Chili Sauce, (non-spicy Thai sauce)

° 1/4 cup ketchup

° 1 C. fresh or crushed black pepper

° 1 C. sugar

° 1 C. spicy brown mustard

° 1 C. Worcestershire sauce

° 1 C. A.1. Steak sauce

° 1 C. garlic powder

° 1/2 tsp creole seasoning

° 1/2 tsp onion powder

° 1/2 tsp horseradish

° 1/4 tsp Louisiana Hot Sauce

° 1 Tbl sweet pickle juice (or fresh squeezed lemon juice if you prefer)

° 1 Tbl. coarsely chopped fresh parsley

° 1/2 cup canola or vegetable oil
