Apple Pie Wontons
If you love apple pie but want something a little different, apple pie wontons are a fun and delicious alternative. They have all the familiar flavours of a classic apple pie, including tender apples, cinnamon, brown sugar, and caramel, wrapped inside a light, crispy wonton shell.
The best part is how easy they are to make. Instead of preparing a traditional pie crust, you use ready-made wonton wrappers to create individual dessert bites. The air fryer cooks them until the outside is lightly golden and crunchy while the apple filling becomes warm and delicious.
These caramel apple wontons are ideal when you want a quick homemade dessert without baking an entire pie. They are also easy to serve at gatherings because each wonton is a small, hand-held treat.
Here are a few reasons to love this recipe:
- Easy to prepare: Ready-made wonton wrappers save time in the kitchen.
- Classic apple pie flavour: Cinnamon, brown sugar, and apples create a comforting filling.
- Crispy texture: The air fryer helps the wrappers become golden with only a little oil.
- Perfect individual portions: Each wonton is easy to serve and enjoy.
- Caramel sweetness: Caramel sauce adds a rich, buttery finish.
- Customisable: Add chopped pecans, extra cinnamon, or a pinch of nutmeg to make them your own.
For the best results, use a firm apple variety, cut the apple into small pieces, and avoid overfilling the wrappers. Sealing the edges properly helps prevent the filling from escaping during cooking.
Here Is What You’ll Need
This recipe uses simple ingredients that are easy to find at most supermarkets.
Ingredients
- 12 wonton wrappers: These form the crispy outer shell. Look for them in the chilled or frozen section of your supermarket.
- 1 medium apple: Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Braeburn, or Pink Lady apples work well.
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar: Adds sweetness and a rich, caramel-like flavour.
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon: Gives the filling its classic apple pie flavour.
- 1 teaspoon all-purpose flour or cornstarch: Helps thicken the apple juices as the filling cooks.
- 1 teaspoon lemon juice: Adds brightness and balances the sweetness.
- 2 tablespoons caramel sauce: Use a thick caramel sauce for the filling, plus extra for drizzling when serving.
- 1 tablespoon melted butter: Helps coat the wontons and encourages a golden finish.
- 1–2 tablespoons water: For sealing the edges of the wonton wrappers.
- Optional powdered sugar: For a simple finishing touch.
Choosing the Best Apples
Firm apples work best because they hold their shape when heated. Granny Smith apples provide a tart flavour that balances the brown sugar and caramel, while Honeycrisp and Pink Lady apples create a sweeter filling.
Ingredient Tips
Use thick caramel sauce. Very runny caramel can leak out during cooking. If your caramel sauce is thin, use a small amount inside each wonton and save the rest for serving.
Cut the apple into small pieces. Small, evenly sized cubes soften quickly and are easier to fit inside the wrappers.
Don’t add too much filling. About 1–2 teaspoons per wrapper is usually enough. Overfilling makes the wontons harder to seal and increases the chance of leakage.
Keep the wrappers covered. Wonton wrappers can dry out quickly. Keep unused wrappers under a slightly damp, clean kitchen towel while assembling the dessert.
How To Make Air Fryer Caramel Apple Wontons
These caramel apple wontons are simple to assemble and cook quickly. Follow the steps below for a crispy outside and a warm, sweet filling.
Step 1: Prepare the Apple Filling
Peel the apple if desired, remove the core, and cut it into small cubes.
Place the apple pieces in a bowl and add the brown sugar, cinnamon, flour or cornstarch, and lemon juice. Stir until the apple pieces are evenly coated.
Transfer the mixture to a small saucepan and cook over medium-low heat for approximately 4–6 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the apples begin to soften and the mixture thickens. Remove from the heat and allow the filling to cool slightly.
Stir in the caramel sauce. Avoid adding too much caramel, as excess liquid can make the wrappers difficult to seal.
Tip: Pre-cooking the apples helps ensure that the filling becomes tender during the short air fryer cooking time.
Step 2: Prepare the Wonton Wrappers
Place a wonton wrapper on a clean, dry work surface, with one corner pointing towards you to create a diamond shape.
Spoon approximately 1–2 teaspoons of the cooled apple-caramel filling into the centre. Leave enough space around the edges to seal the wrapper properly.
Dip your finger or a small pastry brush into water and lightly moisten the edges of the wrapper.
Step 3: Fold and Seal the Wontons
Bring the bottom corner up to meet the top corner, forming a triangle. Press the edges together firmly to seal, gently pushing out any trapped air.
You can also bring all four corners together over the filling to create a small pouch. Pinch the seams carefully to make sure they are closed.
Repeat with the remaining wrappers and filling.
Check each wonton for gaps before cooking. Any openings may allow the filling or caramel to escape.
Step 4: Brush with Butter
Lightly brush both sides of the wontons with melted butter. This helps the wrappers become golden and crisp.
You can use a small amount of neutral cooking oil instead of butter if preferred.
Avoid applying too much butter, as excess fat can make the wrappers greasy rather than crisp.
Step 5: Preheat the Air Fryer
Preheat your air fryer to 350°F (175°C) for approximately 3 minutes, if recommended by your appliance manufacturer.
Lightly grease the basket if needed to help prevent sticking. Make sure the basket is clean and dry before adding the wontons.
Step 6: Air Fry the Caramel Apple Wontons
Arrange the wontons in a single layer in the air fryer basket, leaving a little space between each one. Cook in batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding.
Air fry at 350°F (175°C) for approximately 5–8 minutes, turning the wontons halfway through if your air fryer browns them unevenly.
Check them after about 4 minutes, as wonton wrappers can brown quickly. They are ready when the outside is golden and crisp.
Cooking times may vary depending on the wrapper thickness, filling temperature, and air fryer model. If the wontons are browning too quickly, lower the temperature slightly and continue cooking until the wrappers are crisp.
Step 7: Cool Slightly and Add Caramel
Carefully remove the wontons from the air fryer and let them cool for 2–3 minutes before serving. The filling will be extremely hot straight out of the basket.
Drizzle with additional caramel sauce and dust lightly with powdered sugar if desired.
Serve warm on their own or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The combination of crispy wontons, warm cinnamon apples, and creamy ice cream makes a delicious dessert!
