Air Fryer Pickles

Air Fryer Pickles

Air Fryer Pickles are crispy, crunchy, tangy, and incredibly easy to make at home. Instead of deep-frying them in a large amount of oil, the air fryer gives pickle slices or spears a delicious golden coating with much less oil. They make a fantastic appetizer, snack, or side dish and are especially delicious served with ranch dressing or your favourite dipping sauce.

Ingredients You Will Need:

The ingredient list for Air Fryer Pickles is simple, and you may already have most of these ingredients in your kitchen.

Pickles: Dill pickle chips are one of the easiest options because they are already sliced and cook quickly. You can also use pickle spears or whole baby dill pickles.

All-Purpose Flour: Flour creates the first layer of the coating and helps the egg mixture stick to the pickle.

Eggs: Beaten eggs provide moisture and help the breadcrumbs adhere to the pickles.

Breadcrumbs: Regular breadcrumbs work well, but panko breadcrumbs are an excellent choice if you want an extra-crispy coating.

Seasonings: Garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper add flavour to the coating. You can adjust the seasoning to suit your taste.

Cooking Spray or Oil: A light coating of cooking spray helps the breading become golden and crisp in the air fryer.

Optional Parmesan: A little finely grated Parmesan cheese mixed into the breadcrumbs adds a savoury, cheesy flavour.

Optional Cayenne or Hot Sauce: If you enjoy spicy fried pickles, add cayenne pepper, chilli powder, or a little hot sauce to the egg mixture.

The key ingredient is obviously the pickle, so choose a variety you already enjoy eating. A crisp, tangy dill pickle will give you the best result.

How to Make Air Fryer Pickles

Making fried pickles in the air fryer is much easier than traditional deep frying. The most important steps are drying the pickles properly and building a good coating.

Prepare the Pickles

Drain the pickles well and remove them from the jar.

Place them on a plate lined with paper towels and gently pat them dry.

This step is extremely important. Pickles contain a lot of liquid, and excess moisture can prevent the breading from becoming crispy. If the pickles are very wet, replace the paper towels and pat them dry again.

If you’re using whole pickles, slice them into approximately ¼-inch to ½-inch rounds. You can also cut them into spears if you prefer larger pieces.

Prepare the Breading Stations

Set up three shallow bowls.

Place the flour in the first bowl.

Beat the eggs in the second bowl.

Add the breadcrumbs and seasonings to the third bowl. Mix well so the spices are evenly distributed.

For a particularly crispy coating, use panko breadcrumbs. Their larger, lighter flakes create more texture than traditional fine breadcrumbs.

Coat the Pickles

Take one pickle slice and lightly coat it in flour.

Shake off any excess flour.

Dip the pickle into the beaten egg, making sure it is coated all over.

Finally, place it into the seasoned breadcrumbs. Gently press the breadcrumbs onto the pickle so they stick well.

Repeat with the remaining pickles.

Try not to rush this step. A good, even coating is what gives air fryer pickles their crunchy exterior.

Preheat the Air Fryer

Preheat your air fryer to approximately 400°F (200°C).

Preheating helps the coating begin cooking immediately when the pickles go into the basket.

If your particular air fryer does not require preheating, you can still make the recipe successfully, although the cooking time may vary slightly.

Arrange the Pickles

Lightly spray the air fryer basket with cooking spray.

Place the breaded pickles into the basket in a single layer.

Don’t stack them or overcrowd the basket. Hot air needs to circulate around each pickle for the coating to become crisp.

Depending on the size of your air fryer, you may need to cook the pickles in batches.

Lightly spray the tops of the breaded pickles with cooking spray. This helps the breadcrumbs brown and become crunchy.

Air Fry

Air fry the pickles at 400°F (200°C) for approximately 8–10 minutes, turning them halfway through cooking.

The exact time can vary depending on the thickness of the pickles, the type of breading, and your air fryer.

Look for a golden-brown, crisp coating.

If you want them darker and crunchier, you can cook them for another 1–2 minutes, keeping a close eye on them.

Once finished, carefully remove the pickles from the basket and allow them to cool for a minute or two.

Serve immediately with your favourite dipping sauce.

The Best Dipping Sauces

Air Fryer Pickles are delicious on their own, but a good dipping sauce takes them to another level.

Ranch dressing is one of the most popular choices and pairs beautifully with tangy dill pickles.

Spicy ranch is perfect if you want a little heat.

Chipotle mayo adds smoky spice and creaminess.

Garlic aioli gives the pickles a richer, more savoury flavour.

Boom boom sauce works particularly well with crispy fried foods.

You can also serve them with honey mustard, spicy ketchup, remoulade, or your favourite burger sauce.

Tips and Tricks for Fried Pickles

Dry the Pickles Very Well

This is probably the most important tip.

Pickles naturally contain a lot of moisture. If you skip the drying step, the coating can become soggy instead of crispy.

Use paper towels to remove as much surface moisture as possible before breading.

Don’t Skip the Flour

The flour creates a dry surface for the egg to adhere to. It also helps the breadcrumbs stick evenly.

Skipping the flour can result in sections of breading falling away during cooking.

Use Panko for Extra Crunch

If crispy texture is your priority, choose panko breadcrumbs.

Panko tends to produce a lighter and crunchier coating than standard breadcrumbs.

You can also combine regular breadcrumbs and panko for a balanced texture.

Don’t Overcrowd the Basket

Give every pickle enough space.

If the pieces are touching or stacked on top of one another, the hot air cannot circulate properly and the coating may remain soft.

Cooking in batches is better than overcrowding the basket.

Spray the Coating Lightly

A little cooking spray can make a big difference.

The air fryer doesn’t need much oil, but a light spray helps the breadcrumb coating turn golden and crispy.

Avoid soaking the pickles in oil because too much oil can make the coating greasy.

Turn Halfway Through

Flipping the pickles halfway through cooking helps both sides become evenly browned.

Use tongs or a spatula and turn them gently so you don’t accidentally remove the coating.

Season Every Layer Carefully

The pickles already have plenty of flavour, but the breading should still be seasoned.

Garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and black pepper make a great basic combination.

You can also add Cajun seasoning, Italian seasoning, smoked paprika, or chilli powder.

Add Parmesan

For cheesy fried pickles, add finely grated Parmesan to the breadcrumb mixture.

The Parmesan becomes golden and savoury during cooking and adds another layer of flavour.

Make Them Spicy

For spicy Air Fryer Pickles, add cayenne pepper or chilli powder to the breadcrumbs.

You can also add hot sauce to the beaten eggs before dipping the pickles.

For an extra spicy version, use a spicy pickle variety.

Don’t Cut Them Too Thick

Very thick pickle slices take longer to crisp and can remain soft inside.

Thin to medium slices are generally easier to bread and cook evenly.

Serve Immediately

Air Fryer Pickles are at their best when they’re fresh and hot.

As they sit, steam from the pickle can soften the crispy coating.

If you’re serving them at a party, cook them as close to serving time as possible.

What Pickles are Best for Frying?

Choosing the right pickle can make a noticeable difference in your finished Air Fryer Pickles.

Dill Pickle Chips

Dill pickle chips are probably the easiest option.

They’re already sliced, making them convenient for breading and cooking. Their round shape also creates a great balance between crispy coating and juicy pickle.

Choose chips that are relatively thick rather than extremely thin.

Kosher Dill Pickles

Kosher dill pickles are another excellent choice. They tend to have a strong garlic-and-dill flavour that works particularly well with a crispy coating.

If you love bold pickle flavour, kosher dills are worth trying.

Pickle Spears

Pickle spears are perfect if you want larger fried pickles.

Because they contain more pickle per piece, they are especially satisfying as an appetizer.

They may need slightly more cooking time than thin chips, so keep an eye on them while air frying.

Baby Dill Pickles

Small baby dill pickles can be breaded whole or cut lengthwise.

They create a thicker, more substantial fried pickle and are great for dipping.

Sweet Pickles

You can technically fry sweet pickles, but they will give you a very different flavour.

The combination of sweet pickle brine and savoury breading can be delicious if you enjoy sweet-and-savoury foods.

For a classic fried pickle flavour, however, dill pickles are generally the better choice.

Hamburger Pickle Slices

Pre-sliced hamburger pickles can work, but very thin slices aren’t ideal.

Thin pickles can become soft quickly and may be difficult to bread without breaking.

If these are the only pickles you have available, reduce the cooking time and handle them carefully.

What About Bread-and-Butter Pickles?

Bread-and-butter pickles can also be used. They have a sweeter flavour and often contain additional spices.

If you enjoy sweet and tangy flavours, they can make an interesting variation.

For the classic restaurant-style fried pickle experience, stick with crisp dill pickles.

Are Fried Pickles Good Reheated?

Yes, you can reheat Air Fryer Pickles, although they are always best when freshly cooked.

The air fryer is also the best way to reheat them because it can restore some of the crispness that is lost after refrigeration.

Place leftover fried pickles in the air fryer in a single layer.

Heat them at approximately 350°F (175°C) for 3–5 minutes, checking them toward the end.

There’s usually no need to add additional oil.

Avoid reheating them in the microwave if possible. While the microwave will warm them quickly, it can make the breadcrumb coating soft and chewy.

If your fried pickles have been refrigerated, allow them to sit for a few minutes while the air fryer preheats.

Don’t overcrowd the basket during reheating. Give the pickles room so hot air can circulate around them.

For the best texture, eat leftovers within a day or two.

If you know you will have leftovers, it’s a good idea to store them in an airtight container lined with a paper towel. The paper towel can help absorb some excess moisture.

Keep in mind that reheated fried pickles won’t usually be quite as crispy as they were immediately after cooking. The moisture from the pickle naturally migrates into the coating over time.

Still, the air fryer does an excellent job of bringing back much of the crunch.

Air Fryer Pickles are a simple, delicious snack that combines the tangy flavour of dill pickles with a golden, crunchy coating. They’re easy enough for a quick afternoon snack but tasty enough to serve at parties, game-day gatherings, barbecues, or family dinners.

The secret to great fried pickles is simple: dry the pickles thoroughly, use a well-seasoned coating, don’t overcrowd the air fryer, and serve them while they’re hot and crispy.

Once you’ve mastered the basic recipe, experiment with spicy seasonings, Parmesan, different dipping sauces, and different types of pickles. Whether you prefer classic dill chips or hearty pickle spears, the air fryer makes it easy to enjoy crispy fried pickles at home without deep frying.
