Mint Chocolate Muddy Buddies

Mint Chocolate Muddy Buddies are a deliciously crunchy, chocolatey, and refreshing snack made with Chex cereal, melted chocolate, creamy peanut butter, mint flavour, and powdered sugar. Inspired by the classic muddy buddies, this minty version is perfect for Christmas, St. Patrick’s Day, parties, movie nights, or anytime you’re craving an easy sweet treat.

Andes Mint Muddy Buddies

If you love the combination of rich chocolate and refreshing mint, these Andes Mint Muddy Buddies are a must-try. They take the classic muddy buddy snack and give it a delicious mint chocolate twist.

Crunchy Chex cereal is coated in a smooth mixture of melted chocolate, peanut butter, and mint-flavoured chocolate. The coated cereal is then tossed with powdered sugar until every piece has a sweet, snowy coating.

The result is an irresistible snack with plenty of chocolate flavour, a subtle minty finish, and a satisfying crunch.

These muddy buddies are also incredibly easy to customize. Add chopped Andes-style mint chocolates, mini chocolate chips, crushed peppermint candies, or festive sprinkles to create a version for any occasion.

Ingredients Needed

Chex cereal: Rice Chex or Corn Chex both work well. Their light, crunchy texture makes them perfect for coating.

Chocolate chips: Semi-sweet chocolate chips provide a rich chocolate flavour.

Mint chocolate candies: Andes-style mint chocolate pieces add the signature chocolate-mint flavour.

Creamy peanut butter: Peanut butter helps create a smooth coating and adds a subtle nutty flavour.

Butter: Butter helps the chocolate mixture melt smoothly and adds richness.

Vanilla extract: A little vanilla enhances the chocolate flavour.

Peppermint extract: A small amount adds extra mint flavour. Use it sparingly because peppermint extract can be quite strong.

Powdered sugar: Powdered sugar creates the classic sweet coating and helps keep the cereal pieces from sticking together.

Optional toppings: Add chopped mint chocolates, mini chocolate chips, crushed peppermint candies, or green sprinkles.

If you have a peanut allergy, you can replace the peanut butter with a suitable alternative such as sunflower seed butter.

How To Make Mint Chocolate Muddy Buddies

Step 1: Add the Cereal

Place the Chex cereal in a large mixing bowl.

Make sure you use a large enough bowl to give you plenty of room to gently mix the cereal without crushing it.

Set aside.

Step 2: Melt the Chocolate Mixture

Add the chocolate chips, mint chocolate pieces, peanut butter, and butter to a microwave-safe bowl.

Microwave in short intervals, stirring well after each interval.

Continue until the mixture is completely melted and smooth.

Stir in the vanilla extract and peppermint extract.

Be careful with the peppermint extract. A small amount can provide plenty of mint flavour.

Step 3: Coat the Cereal

Pour the melted chocolate mixture over the Chex cereal.

Using a large spatula, gently fold the cereal until each piece is coated.

Try not to stir too aggressively because the cereal can break easily.

Step 4: Add the Powdered Sugar

Transfer the coated cereal into a large resealable food-storage bag.

Add the powdered sugar.

Seal the bag securely and gently shake until all of the cereal pieces are coated in powdered sugar.

If you prefer a thicker coating, add a little more powdered sugar and shake again.

Step 5: Let It Set

Spread the coated cereal onto a large baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Allow it to cool and set completely.

Separating the pieces slightly while they cool will help prevent large clusters from forming.

Step 6: Add the Minty Extras

Once the muddy buddies have cooled, add chopped mint chocolate pieces, mini chocolate chips, crushed peppermint candies, or green sprinkles.

Gently toss everything together.

Step 7: Serve

Transfer the Mint Chocolate Muddy Buddies to a serving bowl.

Serve immediately or package them into small bags for parties, gifts, or holiday treats.

Variations and Additions

There are plenty of ways to customize these mint chocolate muddy buddies.

Extra Minty

For a stronger mint flavour, add a tiny amount of additional peppermint extract. Be careful not to add too much, as the flavour can quickly become overpowering.

You can also mix in crushed peppermint candies.

White Chocolate Mint

Replace some of the semi-sweet chocolate with white chocolate for a creamy, sweet variation.

Add green sprinkles for a beautiful mint-themed snack.

Chocolate Lover’s Version

Add extra chocolate chips, chocolate chunks, or chopped chocolate candies after the cereal has cooled.

Peppermint Crunch

Add crushed peppermint candies or peppermint bark for extra crunch and a festive holiday flavour.

Nutty Mint Chocolate

Add chopped almonds, peanuts, pecans, or walnuts for extra crunch.

St. Patrick’s Day Version

Add green and white sprinkles and green candy-coated chocolates for a festive St. Patrick’s Day treat.

Christmas Version

Use red, green, and white sprinkles and add crushed candy canes for a Christmas-inspired version.

Make It Peanut-Free

Replace peanut butter with sunflower seed butter or another suitable alternative if needed.

Always check the ingredient labels of your chocolate and other mix-ins when preparing treats for someone with food allergies.

How To Store

Allow the Mint Chocolate Muddy Buddies to cool completely before storing them.

Place the snack in an airtight container and keep it at room temperature in a cool, dry place.

Avoid storing it somewhere warm because the chocolate coating can soften or melt.

For the best crunch and flavour, keep the container tightly sealed whenever you’re not serving the snack.

Can You Freeze Muddy Buddies?

Yes, you can freeze Mint Chocolate Muddy Buddies.

Place the completely cooled snack in a freezer-safe airtight container or freezer bag.

Remove as much excess air as possible before sealing.

When you’re ready to enjoy it, allow the snack to come back to room temperature while still sealed to help reduce condensation.

Once thawed, give it a gentle toss before serving.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 10 cups square rice cereal
  • 6 oz chocolate chips
  • 6 oz green candy melts
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 cup mint m&ms
  • 1 cup chocolate mints like Andes mints

Instructions

  1. Melt chocolate chips in a large microwave safe bowl, stirring every 15 seconds until melted. Pour 5 cups of the cereal squares into the chocolate and stir until completely coated. Add in 1 cup of powdered sugar and mix.
  2. In another large microwave safe bowl melt the green candy melts carefully, stirring every 10 seconds. Once melted add 5 cups of the cereal squares and stir. Pour into a big zip lock bag and add 1 cup of powdered sugar, zip up and shake until everything is coated. You can either do both in a bowl and stir or both in a zip lock bag and shake whichever you like!
  3. Combine both mixes of the coated squares into one zip lock bag (or divide into two) mix in 1 cup of m&ms and 1 cup of the mints, zip up and shake until well mixed.
  4. Refrigerate for 10 minutes and enjoy!

Notes

  • For a delicious twist, try making these mint chocolate muddy buddies using dark chocolate!
  • There’s two ways to make this, in a bowl or a zip lock bag. My favorite way is the zip lock bag because it’s less mess and one less dish to wash.
  • Don’t skip the 10 minute chill at the end. It may seem silly, but without it the snack mix will be sticky since the chocolate won’t have had time to set up properly.
