Fried clams are one of those timeless coastal indulgences—crispy, briny, and golden, often evoking memories of beachside shacks, paper-lined baskets, and warm summer days by the sea. Originating from New England in the early 20th century, fried clams quickly captured the hearts (and appetites) of seafood lovers across the United States and beyond. Traditionally deep-fried, they are typically dunked in a seasoned flour or cornmeal coating, then submerged in hot oil until they reach that iconic golden crunch.

However, with the rise of air fryers—a culinary revolution offering healthier versions of fried favorites—we can now recreate that same irresistible crispiness with a fraction of the oil and effort. Enter the Air Fryer Fried Clams, a modern twist on a beloved classic that doesn’t sacrifice taste or texture.

Whether you’re seeking a lighter alternative to deep-frying, looking to try something new with your air fryer, or simply craving that oceanic crunch, this guide walks you through everything you need to know to master air fryer fried clams—from choosing the best clams to achieving the perfect breading, seasoning, and dipping sauces. Best of all, it’s quicker, less messy, and just as mouthwatering.

Let’s dive into this crispy, salty, savory treat and bring a little seaside joy straight to your kitchen.

HOW TO COOK AIR FRIED FROZEN CLAM STRIPS AND BELLIES

Cooking or Air Frying Pre-Cooked Clam Strips:

These are precooked and already breaded for you for a quick and easy meal. There are so many great brands on the market now.

They should go from the freezer to the air fryer for best results, and you don’t want to let them thaw. Otherwise, they will end up watery. So, for best results, add them directly to your air fryer basket, frozen. No oil is needed since they already used oil when they precooked them.

Cooking or Air Frying Raw Clam Strips:

Raw: If you purchase raw clam strips or bellies, the store or company already breaded them, but did not cook them. You can still use the same recipe, but your time would be increased, and I would spray some cooking spray on them so that the clam strips crisp up.
