Sharing another air fryer side dish recipe with you today, and this one is just as simple as all the rest. If you enjoy quick, easy and versatile vegetable side dishes made in your air fryer, you’ll want to add this one to the list to try.
Why you’ll love these air fryer mushrooms and onions
- You need just 5 basic ingredients.
- They’re super simple to make. You need just 5 minutes to prep and the air fryer does the rest.
- You don’t need to constantly stir the mushrooms and onions on the stovetop. Other than stirring them once, they’re pretty hands off in the air fryer.
- They make great leftovers and reheat quickly in the microwave for an easy side dish.
- They’re made with oil not butter, so the recipe is dairy-free and vegan.
What you’ll need for this recipe
The ingredient list is short and simple.
Fresh mushrooms – I normally use cremini mushrooms as I like the firm texture and earthy flavour but you can also use button mushrooms.
Yellow onion – This is probably the most common type of onion. It has a strong flavour and it’s great for caramelizing. If you prefer a milder onion, try using a white onion. And for a sweeter flavour, you can use a red onion.
Extra virgin olive oil – This replaces the butter in the recipe. I always use evoo but you can choose another type of oil if you prefer.
Salt and pepper – To keep it simple, just a bit of salt and pepper is all the seasoning this recipe calls for. Free feel to add more or less to suit your taste.
What’s the best way to clean mushrooms?
You can clean mushrooms in two different ways:
- You can gently rub the dirt off each one with a paper towel. This can be a bit time consuming, and doesn’t always work well if the mushrooms have a lot of dirt on them.
- You can rinse the mushrooms in a colander and pat them dry with a paper towel. Just make sure not to soak the mushrooms in water as they will absorb the water, which affects how well they air fry. Also, don’t wash and cut the mushrooms too far in advance of cooking as they will start to discolour.
How to cook mushrooms and onions in the air fryer
- Clean and chop your mushrooms and slice your onions.
- Add them to a large bowl and toss with oil, salt and pepper.
- Place the seasoned mushrooms and onions in the air fryer basket and air fry on 400F for 15-17 minutes, stirring them at the mid-way point.
- Serve immediately, or store covered in the refrigerator.
How do you know when onions and mushrooms are cooked?
The mushrooms should be browned and tender, but not too soft. They will also shrink in size quite a bit. That’s why I usually cut mushrooms into thick slices for this recipe.
The onions will get soft and translucent and start to caramelize around the edges after about 15 minutes of air frying. If you want them caramelized a bit more, air fry them for another few minutes. Just keep an eye on them. If you air fry the mushrooms and onions for too much longer, they will start to dry out and the onions will burn.
How to serve air fried mushrooms and onions
- We usually serve them as a side with grilled steaks and pork chops.
- Lately, we’ve also been adding them to homemade burgers and pizza.
- They would also be great on fajitas or hot sandwiches, or mixed in with dips and sauces.
Additional recipe tips and substitutions
- As the mushrooms shrink, I usually cut them in half instead of into thin slices. If your mushrooms are large, you may want to quarter them.
- The onions are cut into 1/2-inch slices, so they get soft but not mushy. If you like your onions on the softer side, try cutting them into smaller slices.
- Feel free to change up the seasonings in this recipe and add some garlic and/or dried herbs.
- I used a Philips 2.75 quart air fryer to make this recipe. If you’re using a different brand, model and/or size, you may need to adjust the temperature or air frying time slightly.
