Air Fryer Poached Eggs

Air Fryer Poached Eggs

Air Fryer Poached Eggs are a simple and surprisingly easy way to make perfectly cooked eggs without standing over a pan of simmering water. With just a few basic ingredients and a small oven-safe dish, you can enjoy tender egg whites and deliciously runny yolks with minimal effort.

Why this will be your go-to recipe

Making poached eggs traditionally can feel a little intimidating. You need to get the water temperature right, create the perfect swirl, and carefully drop the egg into the water without breaking the yolk.

The air fryer offers a much simpler method.

You can cook the eggs individually in small heat-safe dishes, making it easy to control how you like your yolks. Whether you prefer a soft, runny centre or a slightly firmer yolk, you can adjust the cooking time to suit your taste.

There is also very little cleanup. Instead of dealing with a saucepan of water, you simply cook the eggs in the air fryer and wash the small dishes afterwards.

Air Fryer Poached Eggs are perfect for breakfast, brunch, avocado toast, English muffins, eggs Benedict, or a quick protein-packed meal.

Ingredients and equipment

You only need a few simple ingredients to make air fryer poached eggs.

Eggs: Use fresh eggs whenever possible. Fresher eggs tend to hold their shape better during cooking.

Water: A small amount of hot water helps create the moist environment needed to gently cook the eggs.

Salt: Add salt after cooking or just before serving for extra flavour.

Black Pepper: Freshly ground black pepper is delicious over the finished eggs.

Equipment

Air Fryer: Any standard basket-style air fryer can work. Cooking times may vary depending on the model.

Small Heat-Safe Ramekins: Use oven-safe ramekins or small dishes that comfortably fit inside your air fryer basket.

Cooking Spray or Oil: A light coating helps prevent the egg from sticking to the dish.

Slotted Spoon: Useful for gently removing the egg if you are using a larger dish or water bath method.

Ingredient substitutions

There isn’t much you need to change in this recipe, but there are a few options if you’re working with what you already have.

Eggs: Large eggs are generally the easiest to work with, but medium eggs can also be used. You may need to slightly adjust the cooking time.

Water: Water is the simplest option, but you can experiment with adding a small splash of milk for a slightly different texture. However, water is recommended for classic poached eggs.

Salt: Regular table salt, sea salt, or kosher salt can all be used.

Black Pepper: Try white pepper, smoked pepper, or a pinch of chilli flakes for a different flavour.

Cooking Spray: If you don’t have cooking spray, lightly brush the ramekin with olive oil, avocado oil, or melted butter.

You can also finish your eggs with fresh herbs such as chives, parsley, dill, or spring onions.

How to make the dish

Start by preheating your air fryer to 350°F (175°C) for a few minutes. Preheating helps create a more consistent cooking environment.

Lightly grease one or two small oven-safe ramekins with cooking spray or a little oil.

Add a small amount of hot water to each ramekin. The water should be enough to surround the egg without overflowing when the egg is added.

Carefully crack an egg into each ramekin. Try not to break the yolk.

Place the ramekins carefully into the air fryer basket.

Air fry at 350°F (175°C) for approximately 5–8 minutes, depending on your air fryer and how firm you like your eggs.

Start checking the eggs around the 5-minute mark. The whites should be mostly set while the yolk remains soft and runny for a classic poached egg.

If you prefer a firmer yolk, continue cooking for another minute or two.

Carefully remove the ramekins from the air fryer because they will be very hot.

Use a spoon or small spatula to gently lift the poached egg from the ramekin. Drain any excess water before transferring it to your plate.

Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

Serve immediately with toast, avocado, English muffins, smoked salmon, or your favourite breakfast sides.

Recipe notes

Use Fresh Eggs: Fresh eggs generally produce better-shaped poached eggs because the whites are thicker and hold together more easily.

Don’t Overfill the Ramekin: Leave enough room around the egg for the water and for safe handling.

Watch the First Batch: Every air fryer is slightly different. Your first batch may require some adjustment to the cooking time.

Check Early: If you want a runny yolk, start checking the eggs around 5 minutes. It is easier to cook them longer than to fix an overcooked egg.

Room-Temperature Eggs: Using eggs that aren’t extremely cold can sometimes help with more even cooking.

Handle the Ramekins Carefully: They become extremely hot inside the air fryer. Use oven mitts or heat-resistant gloves when removing them.

Serve Immediately: Poached eggs are best enjoyed straight away while the whites are tender and the yolks are warm and creamy.

Perfect for Meal Ideas: Serve your Air Fryer Poached Eggs over avocado toast, crispy potatoes, English muffins, roasted vegetables, or a slice of sourdough. They also make a simple shortcut for homemade eggs Benedict.

Once you find the exact cooking time that works with your particular air fryer, this method can become one of the easiest ways to make poached eggs at home.
