Cooking bacon in the air fryer is one of the easiest and most reliable ways to get perfectly crispy strips every time. Instead of standing over a hot pan while grease splatters everywhere, the air fryer allows the bacon to cook evenly with minimal mess. The hot circulating air crisps the bacon beautifully while allowing excess fat to drip away, resulting in bacon that is crunchy, flavorful, and less greasy than traditional stovetop versions.

Whether you’re preparing a classic breakfast, topping a burger, or adding bacon to salads and sandwiches, the air fryer makes the process fast and convenient. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about cooking bacon in the air fryer, including cooking times, tips for perfect crispiness, topping ideas, meal pairings, and answers to common questions.

Ingredients

One of the best parts about cooking bacon in the air fryer is its simplicity. You only need one main ingredient.

Main Ingredient

  • 8–12 slices bacon (regular, thick-cut, or turkey bacon)

Optional Seasonings and Add-Ons

Although bacon tastes great on its own, you can enhance it with extra flavor:

  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon honey

These optional additions can transform ordinary bacon into a gourmet experience.

Choosing the Right Bacon

Different types of bacon will produce slightly different results.

Regular Cut Bacon

Cooks quickly and crisps easily. Ideal for sandwiches and salads.

Thick-Cut Bacon

Meatier and chewier, with a longer cooking time.

Applewood Smoked Bacon

Adds a deeper smoky flavor.

Turkey Bacon

Lean alternative with less fat.

Maple Bacon

Naturally sweet and great for breakfast dishes.

How To Bacon in Air Fryer

Cooking bacon in the air fryer is incredibly simple. Follow these steps for perfect results.

Step 1: Preheat the Air Fryer (Optional)

Preheat the air fryer to 350°F (175°C) for about 3 minutes.

Preheating helps the bacon cook more evenly.

Step 2: Arrange the Bacon

Place the bacon strips in the air fryer basket in a single layer.

The strips can slightly overlap at first because they will shrink as they cook.

Avoid stacking the bacon.

Step 3: Cook the Bacon

Air fry at 350°F (175°C).

Cooking Times

  • Regular bacon: 7–9 minutes
  • Thick-cut bacon: 9–12 minutes
  • Turkey bacon: 6–8 minutes

Check halfway through cooking and rearrange if necessary.

Step 4: Adjust for Crispiness

If you prefer extra crispy bacon, add 1–2 more minutes of cooking time.

Step 5: Drain the Bacon

Remove the bacon and place it on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess grease.

Let it cool for about a minute before serving.

You Must Know

These tips ensure the best results every time.

1. Don’t Overcrowd the Basket

Air fryers rely on airflow. Overcrowding prevents even cooking.

2. Use the Right Temperature

Cooking at 350°F prevents the bacon from smoking or burning too quickly.

3. Check Frequently

Because bacon thickness varies, check it during the final minutes.

4. Manage Grease

Bacon releases fat during cooking. Pour out excess grease between batches if needed.

5. Use Parchment Paper Carefully

Perforated parchment paper can help with cleanup but should never block airflow.

Topping Variations

Bacon is incredibly versatile and can be enhanced with different flavors.

Maple Glazed Bacon

Brush cooked bacon lightly with maple syrup and cook for one additional minute.

Brown Sugar Bacon

Sprinkle brown sugar before cooking for a sweet caramelized crust.

Pepper Bacon

Add freshly cracked black pepper for a spicy kick.

Spicy Bacon

Dust with cayenne pepper or chili flakes.

Honey Garlic Bacon

Drizzle honey and sprinkle garlic powder.

Parmesan Bacon

After cooking, sprinkle grated Parmesan cheese for a savory finish.

Make It A Meal

Bacon pairs well with a wide variety of dishes.

Classic Breakfast Plate

Serve bacon with:

  • Scrambled eggs
  • Toast
  • Hash browns

Breakfast Sandwich

Add bacon to:

  • Egg and cheese sandwiches
  • Bagels
  • Croissants

Salads

Crumble bacon over:

  • Caesar salad
  • Spinach salad
  • Cobb salad

Burgers

Crispy bacon adds flavor to:

  • Cheeseburgers
  • BBQ burgers
  • Chicken burger

Pasta Dishes

Use bacon in:

  • Carbonara
  • Creamy pasta
  • Mac and cheese

Pro Tips

These expert techniques help make your bacon even better.

1. Add Water to the Bottom Drawer

A small amount of water in the drip tray reduces smoke.

2. Use Foil for Easy Cleanup

Line the bottom tray with foil but never cover airflow holes in the basket.

3. Cook in Batches

Large batches cook more evenly when separated.

4. Save the Bacon Grease

Bacon fat can be used for cooking eggs, vegetables, or potatoes.

5. Cut Bacon in Half

Shorter strips fit better in smaller air fryers.

6. Adjust for Your Air Fryer Model

Different air fryers cook slightly differently, so monitor the first batch.

7. Reheat Bacon in the Air Fryer

Air fry at 350°F for 2–3 minutes to restore crispiness.

Recipe FAQs

Is bacon better in the air fryer?

Many people prefer it because it cooks evenly, produces less mess, and requires no flipping.

Does bacon splatter in the air fryer?

No, the enclosed basket greatly reduces splatter compared to stovetop cooking.

Can I cook frozen bacon in the air fryer?

Yes. Cook for about 2–3 extra minutes and separate the slices halfway through.

Why is my bacon smoking?

Too much grease can cause smoke. Lower the temperature slightly or empty the grease tray.

Do I need oil to cook bacon?

No. Bacon contains enough fat to cook on its own.

Can I cook eggs and bacon together?

It’s best to cook bacon first, then cook eggs separately in the air fryer.

How do I store leftover bacon?

Refrigerate cooked bacon in an airtight container for up to 4 days.

Can I freeze cooked bacon?

Yes. Freeze it in airtight bags for up to 2 months.

This is my bacon in air fryer ninja foodi and it takes less than 8 minutes.

  • Author: Brandy
  • Prep Time: 1 minute
  • Cook Time: 8 minute
  • Total Time: 9 minutes
  • Yield: 2 1x
  • Category: Side Dish
  • Cuisine: American, European Servings

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 rashers of bacon

Instructions

For streaky bacon:

  1. Place the streaky bacon in your ninja air fryer and cook for 6 minutes at 200C (390F) or 180C (355F) depending on how crispy you like your bacon.
  2. You can optionally flip the bacon halfway, but I didn’t. Once you’ve cooked your bacon how you like it, serve up with the rest of your meal!
  3. For super crispy bacon, cook it for 200C (390F) and as you can see in the photos further up in this blog post, it’s very crispy and the fattier parts of the bacon have charred slightly. If this is how you like your bacon, cook it based on these instructions.
  4. For a less crispy, more fatty bacon, cook for 6 minutes at 180C (355F). It leaves I would say around 50% of the bacon un-crispy, giving you more meatier fattier bits to bite on. If this is how you like your streaky bacon cooked, make sure to use these instructions! If you like your streaky bacon completely un-crispy, then cook the bacon for 6 minutes at 160C (320F).

For back bacon:

  1. Place your bacon into the air fryer and cook for 8 minutes at either 180C (355F) or 200C (390F) depending on how crispy and cooked you like it.
  2. You can optionally flip the bacon halfway, but I didn’t. Once you’ve cooked your bacon how you like it, serve up with the rest of your meal!
  3. For bacon whereby the fattier edges of the bacon have crisped up and are slightly charred, cook at 200C (390F) for 8 minutes (see images further up this blog).
  4. For less crispiness around the edges and more fattiness, cook at 180C (355F) for 8 minutes. The ends are still crispy but not as much compared to the 200C/390F bacon. If this is still too crispy for you, cook the bacon at 160C (320F) for 8 minutes.
