Ingredient Notes

You only need a few simple ingredients to make a traditional Club Sandwich. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 3 slices of bread: White sandwich bread is a classic choice, but wholemeal, sourdough, or multigrain bread also works well. Choose slices that are sturdy enough to hold the filling.
  • 3–4 slices cooked turkey or chicken: Deli turkey, sliced roast chicken, or leftover cooked chicken are all excellent options. Use enough to create a generous layer.
  • 2 slices of bacon: Crispy bacon adds a delicious smoky and salty flavour. Cook until golden and crisp, then drain on paper towels.
  • 2 slices of tomato: Use ripe but firm tomatoes to add freshness and moisture without making the sandwich too soggy.
  • 2 lettuce leaves: Iceberg or romaine lettuce provides a refreshing crunch.
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise: Adds a creamy texture and helps bring all the ingredients together. Adjust the amount to your taste.
  • 1 slice of cheddar or Swiss cheese (optional): Adds a lovely savoury flavour and makes the sandwich even more satisfying.
  • Salt and black pepper: Season the tomato lightly to enhance its natural flavour.

Optional extras:

  • Sliced avocado
  • Red onion
  • Cucumber slices
  • Dijon mustard
  • Pickles
  • A little ranch dressing

You can easily swap the ingredients depending on what you have available. The key is to balance the crispy, creamy, fresh, and savoury elements.

How To Make A Club Sandwich

Making a homemade Club Sandwich is incredibly simple. Prepare the ingredients, toast the bread, layer everything together, and slice into classic sandwich triangles.

Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 5 minutes
Total time: Approximately 15 minutes
Servings: 1 large sandwich (2–4 portions, depending on how it is served)

Step 1: Prepare the Ingredients

Start by cooking the bacon in a frying pan over medium heat until crispy. Transfer it to a paper towel-lined plate to remove excess grease.

If you’re using freshly cooked chicken or turkey, make sure it is fully cooked before slicing. You can also use leftover roast chicken or ready-to-eat deli turkey.

Wash and dry the lettuce leaves, then slice the tomato into even rounds.

Having everything prepared before assembling the sandwich makes the process much easier.

Step 2: Toast the Bread

Take three slices of your favourite sandwich bread and toast them until lightly golden.

You can use a toaster or toast them in a frying pan with a little butter.

The bread should be crisp enough to hold the filling but not so hard that it becomes difficult to bite into.

Allow the toast to cool slightly before adding the mayonnaise.

Step 3: Spread the Mayonnaise

Place the three toasted bread slices on a clean work surface.

Spread mayonnaise evenly over one side of each slice. You can also add a little Dijon mustard if you prefer a tangier flavour.

Season the tomato slices lightly with salt and black pepper.

Step 4: Assemble the First Layer

Place one slice of toasted bread, mayonnaise-side up, on a plate or cutting board.

Add the lettuce leaves, followed by the sliced turkey or chicken.

Arrange the tomato slices over the meat, then add the crispy bacon.

If you’re using cheese, place it on top of the meat or bacon.

Step 5: Add the Second Slice of Bread

Place the second slice of toasted bread on top of the first layer, with the mayonnaise-coated side facing upwards.

Gently press down to keep the sandwich stable.

Step 6: Add the Final Layer

Add another layer of lettuce, followed by the remaining turkey or chicken, tomato, and bacon.

You can also add avocado or cucumber if desired.

Finish by placing the third slice of toasted bread on top, mayonnaise-side down.

Step 7: Secure and Slice

Gently press the sandwich together.

Insert two or four cocktail picks through the sandwich to hold the layers in place.

Using a sharp serrated knife, cut the sandwich diagonally into two or four triangles.

Remove any loose ingredients and arrange the sandwich pieces on a serving plate.

Serve immediately with your favourite sides and enjoy!

Tips

A few simple tricks can make a big difference when preparing the perfect Club Sandwich.

  • Toast all three slices: Toasting the bread helps prevent it from becoming soggy and gives the sandwich a lovely texture.
  • Use crispy bacon: Cook the bacon until golden and crisp. Soft or greasy bacon can make the sandwich less enjoyable.
  • Dry the lettuce properly: Wash the lettuce and pat it dry before assembling. Excess water can make the bread soggy.
  • Choose firm tomatoes: Very ripe, watery tomatoes can release too much moisture. Use firm slices and remove excess seeds if necessary.
  • Don’t overfill: A generous filling is delicious, but too many ingredients can make the sandwich difficult to hold and cut.
  • Use a sharp serrated knife: This makes it easier to cut through the toasted bread without crushing the layers.
  • Secure with cocktail picks: Picks help keep the sandwich together, especially when serving it as triangles.
  • Spread mayonnaise evenly: A thin layer across the bread gives every bite a creamy flavour.
  • Assemble just before serving: For the freshest texture, prepare the ingredients ahead of time but build the sandwich when you’re ready to eat.

Easy Variations

You can customise this classic sandwich in several ways:

Chicken Club Sandwich: Replace the turkey with sliced grilled chicken or leftover roast chicken.

Turkey and Avocado Club: Add sliced avocado for a creamy texture and fresh flavour.

Cheese Club Sandwich: Use cheddar, Swiss, provolone, or your favourite cheese for an extra-rich sandwich.

Spicy Club Sandwich: Add sliced jalapeños, spicy mayonnaise, or a little hot sauce.

Vegetarian Club Sandwich: Replace the meat and bacon with grilled vegetables, avocado, cucumber, tomato, and cheese. You can also use vegetarian bacon.

Healthy Club Sandwich: Choose wholemeal bread, lean turkey or chicken, plenty of lettuce and tomato, and a lighter mayonnaise or yoghurt-based dressing.

Leftovers

Club Sandwiches are best enjoyed immediately after assembling because the toasted bread can become soft once it comes into contact with the mayonnaise, tomatoes, and other fillings.

However, you can prepare the ingredients ahead of time and store them separately to make assembling another sandwich quick and easy.

How to Store Leftover Ingredients

  • Cooked chicken or turkey: Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3–4 days.
  • Cooked bacon: Refrigerate in a covered container and use within 4–5 days.
  • Lettuce and tomatoes: Store separately in the refrigerator. Keep lettuce dry and slice fresh tomatoes when needed.
  • Mayonnaise: Keep refrigerated according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Refrigerate perishable ingredients within 2 hours of preparation, or within 1 hour if the temperature is above 90°F (32°C).

Can You Store an Assembled Club Sandwich?

Yes, but it may lose some of its crispness. If you have leftover assembled sandwich portions, wrap them tightly or place them in an airtight container and refrigerate promptly.

For the best quality, enjoy within 24 hours. Discard the sandwich if it has been left at room temperature for more than 2 hours.

Can You Freeze a Club Sandwich?

Freezing a fully assembled Club Sandwich is not recommended. Lettuce and tomatoes become watery after thawing, while mayonnaise can separate and the toasted bread may become soggy.

Instead, freeze suitable cooked chicken or turkey separately in an airtight freezer-safe container. Thaw it in the refrigerator when needed and prepare a fresh sandwich with fresh bread and vegetables.

This classic Club Sandwich is an easy, delicious meal that combines crispy bacon, tender chicken or turkey, fresh vegetables, and creamy mayonnaise between layers of toasted bread. Whether you enjoy it for lunch, brunch, or a quick dinner, it’s a timeless favourite that’s always satisfying!
